Why Tuonela?
(The name behind our blog — and the echoes it carries.)
Tuonela is the land of the dead in Finnish mythology.
Silent, slow, and cold — it’s not a place of pain, but a shadow of what once was.
The river that leads there can’t be crossed by the living.
Unless you’re a hero. Or a fool. Or both.
For us, Tuonela is not just a mythological place, it is the echo we build on. Silent, slow, and cold, a name that carries heaviness, atmosphere, timelessness, and that quiet pull toward what still sings beyond the river.
The Myth Behind the Name
In the Finnish national epic Kalevala, Tuonela is the realm of the dead — ruled by Tuoni and Tuonetar, and guarded by the Swan of Tuonela, whose song is so haunting it belongs to another world entirely.
The story of Lemminkäinen, who dies trying to reach Tuonela and is brought back to life, shows that even death can echo with power and return.
We wanted a name that captured that feeling — something between stillness and resurrection.
Why We Chose Tuonela
The blog isn’t just background noise.
It’s a place to focus on what’s worth remembering.
We write about concerts, records that stand out, bands that caught our attention, releases of the month — and every now and then, a top list or a deeper look at something most people scroll past.
Sometimes it’s underground.
Sometimes it’s mainstream.
Always filtered through our own ears and eyes.
Tuonela felt like the right space for that.
Not loud. Not rushed. Just heavy with meaning.
Tuonela in Music & Myth
If you’ve heard Jean Sibelius’ The Swan of Tuonela, you already know the sound we’re talking about — slow, heavy, cold, and beautiful.
Tuonela has always been a place of silence and echoes.
That’s the atmosphere we try to bring to the blog.
Whether it’s a live report, a forgotten album, or a setlist that still rings in your head two days later — it belongs here.
